In the Medieval period, fishing was both a necessity and a game. Many people fished for food to eat with their families, while others did it for the fun and competition. There were many different types of fishing, spears, nets, pole and line etc. This particular example is net fishing. This painting depicts two men net fishing by the shore of a river. The artist uses wavy, thick, long brushstrokes to symbolizes the movement of the water in the river. The painting looks two dimensional because the artist does't clearly show spacial recession.

Jousting was a medieval sport which was played with two horses charging at one another with the rider holding a lance. The goal of the game was to knock the opponent off their horse onto the ground. "Tournaments started in France in the 11th century. They were public contests of courage and skill. Usually they were held to entertain royalty. They fought on an enclosed field. Many knights died. Many peasants were also killed when the horses went out of control." (getasword.com)

Adults played games too. Backgammon was popular in the middle ages which was known in the middles ages as "back game" or "Bac Gamen." People gambled or played for fun. In this picture, two royalty are playing while a servant caters to them. The board seems out of proportion to the people, and the board protrudes out of the painting. This was probably a leisurely scene.
